The best ending for Daenerys and Jon in Game of Thrones season 8 was right before our eyes from the start.
We know all too well the very end of Game of Thrones season 8 and what it has in store for Daenerys Targaryen. Yet the Mother of Dragons was not necessarily destined to die and the showunners could have chosen a completely different path … As for example the one that can be found by interpreting the title of the saga of George R.R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire, or “A Song of Ice and Fire”. Certainly the most obvious interpretation concerns the opposition between life – fire – and the Night King – ice. Another is the incarnation of Jon in this title, since he is both Stark and Targaryen therefore ice and fire.
The coolest interpretation of the title of the saga – which would also have been practical for the end of season 8 of Game of Thrones – is however that fire and ice are well embodied by characters, but not only by Jon and Daenerys. The whole plot of Game of Thrones is based on the forbidden love story between Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, which then reproduced in the relationship between Daenerys and Jon. This is the reason why we would have preferred not to see Dany die under the blows of Jon, but rather to see their story continue even if neither of them reigns over Westeros – what finally happened.
The huge war started on behalf of Lyanna Stark and her story with Rhaegar Targaryen would have ended thanks to the love of another Stark and another Targaryen. A rather poetic interpretation of “A Song of Ice and Fire” which would have brought a kind of happy ending. It is probably partly for this reason that this could not have happened since George R.R. Martin had already promised a bittersweet ending years ago of that. Fortunately we always have the opportunity to rethink the series and imagine the endings that we like the most while waiting to discover the one that the author has in store for us to conclude his saga.
