Before being an Eternal, Gemma Chan played a character opposite to Sersi, the Kree Minn-Erva.
The movie trailer The Eternals has finally arrived, with its batch of details not to be missed like for example a replica of the character of Sersi. When the latter arrives on Earth alongside Ikaris, she gazes at our planet in wonder and asks “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” A rhetorical question that goes hand in hand with Sersi, who is the member of the group who loves humans and their place of life the most. However, if this sentence was appealing, it is above all because it is in total contradiction with the remarks made by Minn-Erva in Captain marvel, who had described the Earth as “a rat hole”. These two protagonists may not share a passion for the blue planet, but they nevertheless share their performer: Gemma Chan.
As pointed out Screen Rant, Chloé Zhao doesn’t skimp on the details and this line of Sersi could thus be a reference to the previous role of the actress. The opportunity to subtly address the latter’s dual role in the MCU is indeed too good, and we wouldn’t be surprised to find a nod or two to Minn-Erva in the film. Since the announcement of the casting of Gemma Chan, several theories have also looked into this question, even going so far as to suppose that Marvel Studios could evoke some kind of family link between Minn-Erva and Sersi. The presence of Gemma chan twice in the MCU is all the more interesting because she plays on one side an antagonist, and on the other a superheroine whose mission is to defend the Earth and the universe. Obviously, the studios may also have taken the decision to completely ignore this double hat. While waiting for the release to the cinema and the answer to all these questions, find out all you need to know about The Eternals.
