The assistant director returned to the accident that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins last week on the set of Rust.
A week ago, we learned that Alec Baldwin accidentally killed Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, on the set of Rust. Since then, the parties involved as well as the local authorities have spoken about this terrible accident. The circumstances of this tragedy have also come to light, a report released by the Los Angeles Times having provided a clearer picture of the shooting behind the scenes of the American western. According to a search warrant obtained by the media, the prop on the set was to be handled by three people: armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, assistant director Dave Halls and Baldwin himself.

According to initial information, the assistant director did not know that live bullets were in the weapon. However, new details unveiled report that he did not respect security protocol on the set. Specifically, he himself admitted that he would not have checked the gun cartridges before handing it over to Alec Baldwin.. As the last person to handle the pistol before giving it to the actor, the on-set security official’s violation of protocol would therefore have resulted in a loaded gun being returned to his hands. Hall, however, is not the only one who broke protocol although gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez Reed claimed to have ensured that the gun only contained dummy cartridges.

She also reports that no actual bullets were kept on the set, although authorities said of the 500 rounds recovered from the set they suspected some were not fictitious. Ultimately, this accidental shooting seems to be the result of a series of bad decisions and a looseness with respect to safety rules. That being said, no arrests have yet taken place and the hearings of witnesses who were at the Bonanza Creek ranch, where Halyna Hutchins was fatally injured on October 21, continue.
