After going behind the scenes of the game, Housemarque returns today with a series of new information regarding Returnal, his next game coming exclusively on PS5. On the program: a new gameplay trailer as well as a detailed presentation of the loot system and equipment that awaits players alongside Selene.
As Returnal’s release slowly but surely draws closer, its creators do not fail to highlight it and unveil new elements as soon as the opportunity presents itself. In recent weeks, we have been able to take a look behind the scenes of development as well as some new gameplay sequences in HouseCast, the podcast run by the members of the studio. At the end of December, Harry Krueger, the Game Director, returned for example to the creation of the game by highlighting the atmosphere, the environments as well as the fights.
As a TPS, the clashes will also occupy an important part of the game, which looks like “A combination of action and arcade gameplay […], reactive controls and bullet hell sequences’. And justly, Krueger went into more detail on Returnal’s equity component via a lengthy post on the PlayStation Blog. The game director describes it as “A game of fast and frantic battles, intense shooting mechanics, rich in exploration and obstacles to overcome” as well as as “A difficult and rewarding experience”.
Starring Selene, a space pilot stuck in a time loop on the alien planet Atropos, it will push the player to survive the attacks of all kinds of monsters via an extremely extensive array of equipment. Indeed, Returnal will offer a total of 10 weapons on which it will be possible to add more than 90 unique weapon attributes and 10 secondary fire. The attributes then take the form of gameplay modifiers (explosive projectibles, loot extractor, acid puddles, etc.) that can be improved up to three times and can be stacked on the same compatible weapon, which multiplies the number of possibilities in terms of playing style.
In contrast, Krueger reveals that the heroine can only carry one weapon at a time. It is therefore better to make your choice before the various clashes, while knowing that some enemies will need to be faced according to a particular strategy. It is on this point that part of the difficulty of the game will be based. Whenever she is killed, Selene will be sent back to the start of the time loop, just before the moment of crashing on the planet, and may thus lose some of her items and skills.. However, the goal being to progress with each failure, some will still be kept.
This leads the game director to bring up one of the fundamental aspects of Returnal: the loot. Atropos contains hidden objects and other loot allowing the player to approach the gameplay in different ways, whether from an offensive or defensive perspective.. This notably includes weapons and tools, consumables but also strategic relics that can grant various bonuses… or penalties. It will therefore be necessary to examine the various objects carefully to be sure that it does not harm Selene too much later, which can sometimes represent a necessary risk to take.
This promises very devious gaming sessions on Returnal which, as a reminder, will be released exclusively on PS5 on March 19. If the experience tempts you, you can always get a PSN card worth € 50 at a reduced price thanks to Eneba, which will then allow you to pre-order the game through PlayStation Store.
