melty: Hi Michele! Happy to be in Paris? What does this city inspire you?
Michele Morrone, singer and main actor of the movie 365 DNI: I am very happy to be here, it is the first time that I come to Paris. There are a lot of things that inspire me about French culture, starting with history. I am a big fan of Baudelaire, I love artists such as Arthur Rimbaud, they are very inspiring.
melty: Your first Dark Room album is a hit. Where does your passion for singing come from?
Michele Morrone: I’ve always had this passion but I never took it seriously. I started to get serious about singing after 365 DNI, when I had to make the soundtrack.
melty: Are your songs inspired by your own life? From your own experiences?
Michele Morrone: Absolutely. There are four songs that relate to the film (“Hard For Me”, “Whatch Me Burn”, “Dark Room” and “Feel It”). But if we talk about others like for example “Next”, “Dad” or “Do It Like That”, which is more fun, they are more related to my own life.
melty: How do you explain its success?
Michele Morrone: To be honest, I think this album became so popular because of the film. Because it came out all over the world with the songs and everything that I signed in my contract with Universal. But I think people like the way I sing. Singing is serious for me, so interpretation is very important.
melty: Which song from your Dark Room album are you the most proud of?
Michele Morrone: “Dad”. Because it’s a kind of dialogue between me and my father, who passed away when I was 12 years old. But the interesting thing about this song is that I try to write the words he would have had to me and not the other way around. It’s my father who sings, not me.
melty: What kind of father are you with your children?
Michele Morrone: I like traditional families. For example, my father was the father and I was the son, do you understand? Today some parents try to be friends with their children and they give them whatever they want and they always say “yes” to everything. I’m not that kind of father who always says “yes” and I explain why, but I’m not a dictator either. I try to be strict with them because there are a lot of dangerous things in this world and I don’t want them to be afraid of the world but to understand what is right and good for them. Because I had the same education. My father was strict but he loved me very much and I didn’t always understand why he said “no” but now I am an adult, a father and have two children and I understand better.
melty: Why are you singing in English?
Michele Morrone: Firstly because I can express myself better in English and secondly because I want my message to be understood around the world. If I sang in Italian, no one would understand except the Italians of course.
melty: With which artist would you dream of collaborating?
Michele Morrone: There are a lot of them with very different styles but I would love to collaborate with Sam Smith, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish but also with Marilyn Manson, which has nothing to do with it.
melty: Do you know any French artists?
Michele Morrone: Maître Gims, I adore him! There is also an artist I listened to when I was a child … Alizée! She is beautiful, I was totally in love with her when I was young. There is also Stromae and Aya Nakamura.
melty: What do you prefer between music and comedy?
Michele Morrone: I can’t choose … It’s like being asked to choose between my first or my second child. It gives me different emotions because in the cinema I can be someone else and I love it. But with the music I am myself.
melty: You launched your brand Aurum Roma, Can you tell us more ?
Michele Morrone: I try to create what I would like to see on a woman with bikinis and kimonos, this is what I do with Aurum Roma. Currently, I am also working in Dubai to launch my first unisex perfume in December which will be called “Feel It”, like my song. I try to get into business because I like it but also because as an artist it’s difficult to shoot a movie or make a sound every month, so in my free time I like to be busy.
melty: You met Ester Expósito in Rome this summer which made the buzz on the web. Is she a good friend of yours?
Michele Morrone: No, she’s not a friend. We were just in the same place because she also works for Netflix with the series Elite.
melty: What series are you watching on Netflix?
Michele Morrone: I was looking Unorthodox and I really liked it. It’s about a young girl who lives in a Jewish community and who doesn’t love her life and decides to flee. There is a lot of action in it!
melty: How your family and your friends reacted after the release of the 365 DNI film?
Michele Morrone: They were very proud of me. They all loved the movie, they all loved my work and the way I had managed to get into the skin of my character.
melty: Are you having trouble with your new sex symbol status?
Michele Morrone: It’s so strange to me, because a year ago I didn’t even have enough money to pay my rent. I’m grateful for the love of my fans, that they love what I do. And to keep it all, you just have to close your eyes and work 10, 20, 30 hours a day to be even better for those who believe in you.
melty: How did you manage your sudden international notoriety?
Michele Morrone: It’s weird to have bodyguards, but I got popular because of something beautiful. I’m not going to spit on it because there are people who get up every day at 5 a.m. to do a job they don’t like. I do what I want and this celebrity goes with it and I accept it and I’m grateful for it.
melty: Do you like to take time for your fans?
Michele Morrone: Even when I’m late or going somewhere, I have no problem stopping when asked for a photo. As a public figure, just one word spoken can change a person’s life. So when there is someone who admires you, what does it cost to give a little joy? It’s kind of a contribution that artists have to make.
melty: What are your future projects? Did you have any other film proposals?
Michele Morrone: I am starting to shoot a Mexican film produced by Hollywood and I have other projects coming out, especially on a big platform once again. There is also 365 DNI 2 and I’m also working a lot on my second album, I write the new songs and I can’t wait for it to come out because there is something that grew in me and even though people liked it Dark Room, I think they’ll love the next one even more!
melty: What themes would you like to address in your next album?
Michele Morrone: There are many. There will be a song in which I talk about a dream I had during confinement, another one that talks about confinement. There will be love, passion, darkness too and a lot of different music with Pop and Rock.
melty: A word for your French fans?
Michele Morrone: I get tons of messages every day from my French fans and I can’t wait to see them one day in concert in Paris because we are in the city of love and my songs are totally related to all of that.
