Horizon Forbidden West on PS4: Sony confirms free PS5 update

Upgrading a PS4 game to the PS5 version is often a hassle. Horizon Forbidden West is the perfect example. Sony initially intended to reserve the upgrade for certain special editions before backpedaling in the face of community complaints. “Players who purchased Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 will be able to upgrade the game for free to play on PS5”, had promised the firm in a statement released last September. The problem is that it’s all a bit confusing on the PlayStation Store. Sony has thankfully just clarified things.

Horizon Forbidden West on PS5, the trick to save 10€

Until recently, the PS Store made no mention of the PS5 upgrade included for free with the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West. It was finally fixed as you can see on the screenshot below. You can therefore buy the €69.99 version without fear to enjoy the game on both consoles. Be careful, however, to go through the web or mobile version of the PS Store, because if you go to the store directly from your PS5, only the €79.99 version and the €99.99 Deluxe edition appear.

This trick also works with the PS4 physical version of Horizon Forbidden West which also offers a free upgrade, which can provide an even greater discount. On the other hand, all other PlayStation Studios games that will be released on both PS5 and PS4 (like God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7) will charge an upgrade for 10€. Sony intends to maintain its pricing policy, which consists of selling the same game at €69.99 on PS4 and €79.99 on PS5.
