Hitman 3 is the first big JV release at the start of 2021, and it’s still a safe bet
IO Interactive comes to the end of its difficult hitman epic. Started in 2016 with Hitman, published by Square Enix, the Danish studio is finally let go by its publisher who is not satisfied with the results and the choice to have made an episodic game. In 2018, IO Interactive released Hitman 2 with the help of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and found the right formula for Agent 47, with good gameplay, damn levels and good replayability. But for the last opus of his trilogy released on January 20, 2021, the studio decides this time to do without an editor and will take care of the publication and distribution alone. Is the was a winning bet for IO Interactive? Answer just below.
We don’t change an agent who wins
Those who made the previous Hitman (and especially the 2) will not be at all disoriented because this new opus offers in terms of gameplay. It must be said that the sandbox formula which consists of having very large areas with a lot of paths possibilities to accomplish its mission, as well as a multitude of ways to assassinate our target and secondary objectives to discover worked admirably. No reason to change it all, especially since the IO know-how in level design will once again offer very interesting areas to explore, from a high tower in Dubai to the Carpathians, via Chongqing or Berlin.
The result is the same as for Hitman 2, we have a lot of fun exploring each level, to discover other solutions to achieve our goal and replayability of this Hitman 3 is just as excellent than that of his big brother. The panel at the end of the mission that allows us to see what we have left to discover remains a very effective incentive to restart the level. The little novelty that pleases followers of completionism is adding shortcuts all over the levels on a model similar to that of the Dark Souls games. Ladders thus make it possible to reach certain parts of the level more easily, if you already have it for the first time by a more conventional path.
The other big novelty is the cell phone in our arsenal who will allow us to take photos and analyze documents and clues in some cases (do not miss the secondary investigation worthy of a game of Cluedo in the second level). In short, very useful both in game and to integrate a photo mode organically and take the time to observe the beauty of the scenery. Because beyond the level design, Hitman 3 is also a graphically beautiful game, especially when it comes to the scattering of light, and that is filled with small details.
You don’t change an agent who doesn’t win.
IO Interactive has kept the same base as Hitman 2 so much that we also kept the bad sides. The automatic backup system is not very reliable and we are once again never better served than by ourselves at this level. AI still has strange behaviors at times even if we have to admit that she is a little more tenacious once she spotted something suspicious. The gun fight is still not very dynamic and even if it’s not very serious (because if we end up in a shootout in a Hitman, it is because we did our job badly), it remains problematic that after three opus for this World of trilogy. Assassination, it’s still so soft on that side.
An opaque world
Despite a small recap of the events at the start of the game, we strongly recommend that you have done at least Hitman 2 before embarking on this new opus if the plot interests you. Although history was never a focal point for Hitman, the little context we are given is not necessarily very clear. The storyline for this trilogy is pretty classic in its unfolding and writing, with powerful people wanting to control the world, and it’s all the more so. too bad not to be able to explain it easily. Fortunately, the gameplay takes precedence over anything in Hitman.
Is it worth it ?
Hitman 3 brings very few new features to the formula developed in the previous opus. But the latter was already so damn good that it is difficult to blame IO Interactive for not having innovated, and the few new features offered are sufficient, since it is especially in the proposed levels that we expected Hitman 3. And it is still fun to explore, with exemplary replayability which makes this last opus of the Agent 47 trilogy a real success and an excellent stealth game. In any case, it gives a lot of confidence to the James Bond video game that IO is developing at this very moment.
