Born on July 5 in Tokyo, Kenji Ito is a video game music composer. Not as famous as some of his colleagues like Koji Kondo or Nobuo Uematsu, he is nonetheless an important figure in the field of specialized composition for the medium. Throughout his career, he has worked on over 30 games, and is considered by those who know him to be one of the most talented artists of his generation.

The Head of SaGa Games

This love of music is born from an early age. From his childhood, Ito received a classical piano training, and decided to make it his job as he embarked on his studies. He then wanted to become a composer, and one of his teachers quickly directed him towards the field of video games, the latter being particularly open, and in full expansion. Following her advice, he applies to work at Square. The box hires him and gives him a project: Final Fantasy Legend II. He is not alone on this project since Nobuo Uematsu is also commissioned on this title. It is this same Final Fantasy Legend that gives birth to the Romancing SaGa series. Considering his work on the Gameboy game, Square decided to give him the project more independently (without Uematsu) in 1992.

A varied career

During his career, Ito will therefore be responsible for all SaGa game soundtracks, starting with Romancing SaGa 1, 2, 3, SaGa Frontier, Ministerl Song, and even much later SaGa Scarlet Grace in 2016. But this is not the composer’s only string to the bow. During his long career, he was also able to work on games like Chocobo Racing, Sword of Mana, Children of Mana, Dawn of Mana, Shadow Hearts Covenant and Shadow Hearts 2. In 2014, he joined his former colleague Nobuo Uematsu for a project by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi: Terra Battle. His new project slated for 2022, Sin Chronicle (a mobile RPG in collaboration with SEGA), shows that Ito is still indeed prolific, and one of the most important figures in Japanese video game music.
