The most unlikely crossovers in video games

These characters have made appearances in games that do not match their universe at all, nor their identity. But that’s what makes the magic of video games: unpredictability!

The crossover is nothing new. We have seen it in the cinema recently: it can even make it possible to sell like never before, when it is carried out smoothly, and especially when it manages to remain consistent with the narration. In video games, things can get a little wilder: you can actually witness crossovers that no one could have ever guessed, simply because the two colliding worlds have absolutely nothing to do with it.. And yet, it has already happened, proof is …

Everybody’s Golf: World Tour – Kratos

A somewhat surprising scene ...
A somewhat surprising scene …

Who expects to see a battlemaster, demigod and someone literally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people (including gods unlucky enough to cross his path), calmly play a round of 18-hole golf? Yet that’s exactly what happens in Everybody’s Golf World Tour, which sees Kratos from God of War in 2008.

Skateboard 3 – Isaac Clarke

After all...
After all…

For those who have never played Dead Space, Isaac Clarke is the main character embodied in the famous horror / science fiction game. And after all, we have mostly seen him in a survival situation, on the verge of being eaten by aliens, but what does he do in his everyday life? Obviously, a little skate! We have the opportunity to play him in Skate 3, which certainly corresponds to one of the most bizarre crossovers in history.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – Monster Hunter

Yes it makes perfect sense
Yes it makes perfect sense

Monster Hunter is a regular series of crossovers. We were recently entitled to Monster Hunter World which was able to offer Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy or The Witcher events. But it is rarer for the license to appear in other games. Yet it has happened before, and in one completely wacky case: MGS Peace Walker offered a few missions in which Snake faced off against some completely spooky dinos during a special event for the crossover.

NBA Street V3 And SSX On Tour – Nintendo Characters

Luigi enjoys winter sports too
Luigi enjoys winter sports too

We know that Mario can do just about anything. But frankly, we still did not expect to see him land, him and his whole gang, in sports games that still look more realistic and less cartoonish (even if they are quite fantastic from the point of view gameplay: NBA Street V3 and SSX On Tour on Gamecube. An appearance that makes no sense, but that we adore all the same.

SimCity – Bowser

He sows destruction wherever he goes
He sows destruction wherever he goes

What would happen if Bowser lived in our world? It seems that on one occasion, the famous villain of the Mario universe got lost in a universe that does not correspond to him, since he appears in the very first SimCity, and in particular in its NES version released in 1989. Bowser simply plays a monster that destroys everything in its path. Not very original, the guy!

Check Your Retro: Nintendogs turns 15 this month

Nintendogs, the famous game that lets you take care of Medor or Snowy on Nintendo DS, is celebrating its 15th birthday this month! Back to this social phenomenon.

Tamagotchi is not new to Japan. The very first of them dates from 1996 (by Bandai). Quickly, these little virtual animals that we have to take care of as we would take care of a pet have become a social phenomenon in Japan, before being exported in the early 2000s all over the world. And necessarily, it didn’t take long before the video game industry, and in particular Nintendo, took inspiration from it to offer an even more rewarding and immersive experience to Tamagotchi fans.. This is how that in 2005 was released Nintendogs, which offers Nintendo DS owners to take care of one or more virtual pets. And the success was immediate.

Gameplay that employs all the features of the DS
Gameplay that employs all the features of the DS

The gameplay is simple, but allows the player to use all the original qualities of the Nintendo DS: you can use the touch screen to play with your dog, scratch it, clean it, tickle it, etc. We can also use the microphone of the system in various situations, such as when you want to call your dog. You can also choose between 6 different breeds of dogs, to have something for everyone. Moreover, we are on a rather basic Tamagotchi experience: we feed, we watch, and our animal grows. If he doesn’t get enough care from us, he may also run away for good.

Welcome and success

An undeniable success
An undeniable success

Not only has the game been incredibly well received by critics, it has also enjoyed some pretty mind-blowing sales figures for a “Tamagotchi” type game. No real story or real goal, and yet it sold over 2 million copies in Japan, boosting sales of the Nintendo DS when it was released by 400%! In the rest of the world, it is quite simply the best-selling DS game, with a total of around 13 million sales in 2007, for a total of 42 million DS sold.. In other words, one in three Nintendo DS owners had Nintendogs. In short, we are here on a success as only Nintendo can do, on an innovative and risky concept, which has been able to please a large number of players in need of dogs.

To come up ?

Despite this success, the last Nintendogs game dates from 2011: Nintendogs + Cats, released on 3DS. Since, the license is at a standstill, yet the Switch could have been the perfect opportunity to bring it back to the fore.. Especially since other studios have been able to take advantage of the absence of Nintendogs games to offer their own vision of Tamagochi for pets. We think in particular of Imagineer, who proposed in 2019 Little Friends Dogs & Cats on Nintendo Switch, using most of the ingredients of Nintendogs. So it would seem that the license is abandoned today …

When villainous characters are actually on our side

You would expect these extremely intimidating characters to be on the wrong side of the fence. They are all mean and mostly alluring, and yet they make valuable allies.

Just because you have a dirty face, protruding muscles and accessible weapons for each hand does not mean that you are necessarily a huge villain. Appearances can be deceiving, and we have proof of that once again with these video game characters, who look extremely aggressive and mischievous, but actually turn out to be on our side.. Sometimes it’s good to have villains in your pocket …

Masako Adachi – Ghost Of Tsushima

Do not push Granny ...
Do not push Granny …

Generally speaking, older people are rarely badass in video games, and that’s a shame. Because when that happens, it can make sparks: we think in particular of MGS 4, or more recently of Ghost of Tsushima and the character of Masako Adachi. She freaks out firstly by her charisma, but also because she eviscerates dozens and dozens of enemies before our eyes. What to be happy to have on our side …

Letho – The Witcher 2

Look at me this monster
Look at me this monster

Letho is incredibly intimidating, that’s a given. Already, it has an impossible build: it is the very definition of the mirror cabinet. Then, because he is literally responsible for the assassination of several kings, and that fate has meant that we had to find him on our way. However, Letho is not such a bad guy, we come to understand him by dint of meeting him.

Cicero – Skyrim

A character that it is difficult to define
A character that it is difficult to define

In general, we don’t really like characters who put on weird makeup or who disguise themselves a little too much. They give the impression of having something to hide. This is what we say to ourselves the first time we meet Cicero in Skyrim. And in real life, we wouldn’t be wrong: it’s still quite a twist. But when we have to kill him, it should be noted that Cicero does not take the first step: he defends himself, but it is not he who attacks us first, to show that he remains our ally.

Garrus – Mass Effect

An incredibly loyal character despite his violent background
An incredibly loyal character despite his violent background

When we see Garrus for the first time, he looks like a great enemy: a stout build, a not really reassuring head, not to mention his very intimidating past history. He killed dozens and dozens of people, but hey, he always did it to protect those he loved. And luckily, Garrus becomes one of the characters most loyal to our cause in the Mass Effect series.

Psycho Mantis – Metal Gear Solid

A very powerful character who offers us considerable help
A very powerful character who offers us considerable help

Not only does Psycho Mantis look super powerful, he also does stuff we don’t understand, like breaking the fourth wall. If one has to face him in the first Metal Gear Solid game, he actually turns out to be a valuable ally whose sole purpose is to avenge the destruction of his village.. He notably allows Snake and Meryl to arrive at the Metal Gear REX hangar, specifying that this is the first time he has used his powers to help someone. A good guy!

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Remaster: Instant Nostalgia Moment, Our Preview

The demo for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 1 + 2 remaster may be terribly short, but it offers an instant throwback to our teenage years, and that’s kind of what we were asking for anyway.

The Tony Hawk’s license is sorely lacking in skate video games. The general public has been losing interest in the genre for quite a number of years now, and its latest representative game, Skater XL, has been a big disappointment for skateboard fans. Since the announcement of a remaster by Activision the hype for this return of Tony Hawk has been great, on the one hand because this remaster represents the hope of having a great skateboarding game that will also appeal to the general public where the Session and Skate games were only moderately successful. But also because it does vibrate the nostalgic chord of many players, who have necessarily spent hours on one of the many opus of the license, whether it is the Pro Skater or the Underground.

The nostalgic fiber

And this nostalgia hits us right in the face long before we start playing, with a intro cutscene featuring skate landmarks already present in the first game from Hawk to Burnquist via Reynolds but also lots of little “new” ones (understand here: skaters who were not there when the game was released), like Bufoni or Arakawa to quote a little women in this environment full of guys. All with Rage Against the Machine’s Guerilla Radio and the magic is already happening. We will be entitled to a very light playlist for this demo but just with RATM and Superman from Goldfinger, it already does the job.

Only Tony Hawk is available in the demo
Only Tony Hawk is available in the demo
A small Switcheroo
A small Switcheroo

Almost like in 2000

Finally, this demo is extremely frustrating since the sessions will only last two minutes each. So we end up doing dozens of tiny sessions on Warehouse, the only map available for this demo, to rediscover the pleasure of yesteryear. Aside from taking your board in hand, all the others Usual Tony Hawk gameplay mechanics are here and in particular the manuals or spine transfers, which were not present in Pro Skater 1 and 2 originals. We quickly find the sensations to which we have been accustomed but this demo is really intended for fans of the license.

We can now do manuals in THPS1
We can now do manuals in THPS1
We couldn't do spine tranfers before Pro Skater 4
We couldn’t do spine tranfers before Pro Skater 4

Don’t expect to see any tutorial or key indications and the demo really relies on the knowledge already known to its player. Almost logical when we know that it will be available initially only to those who have pre-ordered the game. very cool little novelty of this remaster, it’s the animation when you fall. The skater will glide visually before automatically returning to his board. The action is accompanied by a rewinding sound and a muffled sound effect on the music which makes the whole thing very nice. The other little detail that makes the difference is that you can change song by pressing the right joystick.

The entertainment during the falls is damn good
The entertainment during the falls is damn good

Good hope

It will take barely three or four two-minute sessions to find what made Tony Hawk’s license great and that gives great hopes in what will propose the final version. Whether it’s music, gameplay and sensations, with modern graphics, being able to play full version of the game, still scheduled for September 4 seems so far away. The scary dark spot is customization. We could wander through the game menus and see the possible clothes and boards without being able to interact with them, and we sincerely hope thatActivision not going to try to monetize it all and force you to go to the cash shop to get access to it.

Many details on Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Avengers shared by studios

Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will make their debut this year on our PCs or consoles. In preparation for these big releases, teams from both games have delivered a ton of behind-the-scenes details and their heroes in the columns of Entertainment Weekly. We give you the summary.

This year, some of the greatest heroes of the Marvel Universe will be back in two big productions: The first is Marvel’s Avengers, from Crystal Dynamics studio, which you surely already know from the Tomb Raider saga. Hulk, Thor, Captain America or even Iron Man will all land September 4 on PC and consoles. The second is called Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a standalone from Insomniac Games in which the hero of the Spider-Man New Generation movie puts on the costume; the title is scheduled for PS5 at the end of 2020. The protagonists of the Marvel cinematic universe are thus at the center of video game expectations. But the first to have joined a production of such magnitude, let us remember, is Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man, released in 2018 on PS4. John Paquette, its author, explains that the objective was to “design an experience that feels like you’re playing a Marvel movie. Peter thus becomes the star of the best-selling superhero game of all time, with more than 13 million units sold.

Marvel's Avengers
Marvel’s Avengers

Suffice to say that Miles Morales is particularly expected at the turn. And if you were disappointed to learn that this will only be a standalone, artistic director Brian Horton still wants to reassure you: it will be above all a “full arc” on the rise of the young hero. Little reminder on the story, it will take place a year after the events of the first game, in Harlem. The district of Miles is then plagued by a confrontation between an energy company and a terrorist group armed to the teeth. Here, Horton hopes to give us a narration “a little more dense” for a story “emotionally impactful”. And expect to embody a protagonist quite different from his predecessor. Miles Morales will be entitled to his own animations, movements, and powers, such as invisibility or the bioshock ability. The art director notes another point about the character: “What I find really fascinating about the character of Miles is that he has friends that he could let into his world – his human world and his Spider world. He’s a little different in the way he is. ‘tackle things. “

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

And since we are talking about a spin-off, why not mention possible crossovers? Well for Bill Rosemann, vice president of Marvel Games, this is clearly not a target that is in the news: “Right now our plan is to keep each game in its own Marvel Universe “. That won’t stop Spider-Man from taking a detour into Marvel’s Avengers as a PlayStation-exclusive DLC character. And concerning this game besides, the director of Crystal Dynamics, Scot Amos, explains to us that the project took a long time to germinate. Initially, the development teams had more in mind to remodel mobile games. But several years later, they finally stepped back into 80 years of Marvel history, “through all the comics“. “We just said there was so much to do”, explains Amos.

Kamala Khan
Kamala Khan

One character caught the team’s attention a lot, Kamala Khan, first appeared in the Captain Marvel comic in 2013. Pakistani teenager from New Jersey, she is notably able to change the size of her body and take on the appearance of someone else. In the game, she will try to reunite the Avengers, separated following a tragic event.. Rosemann explains: “She has her own inner struggles. She is a fan of superheroes, especially the Avengers. She’s trying to figure out who she is. It looks a lot like a player. She is someone who is now in a world of change where she becomes a superhero, she is looking for mentors. She really met her heroes“. The full interview is available on EW. While waiting to discover the game in detail, we invite you to find our preview of Marvel’s Avengers. And for more next-gen news, we list all the new accessories of the PS5.

Fortnite: Epic launches new clash of the judicial titans and declares war on Apple and Google

Epic Games has embarked on an unprecedented legal war against two of the most powerful companies in the world: Apple and Google. We come back to the events of last evening, which take on the appearance of a soap opera with unprecedented implications.

A pretty mind-blowing new soap opera has just unfolded before our eyes, involving two of the biggest companies in the world, as well as one of the most successful video game studios in recent years. This new legal fight pits Apple and Google against Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite. Let us come back to this situation, which has deteriorated in several stages. It all started when Epic added an “Apple-less” payment option to their game, in order to bypass the Cupertino company’s 30% tax, resulting in a V-Bucks price drop of around 20%.. It is strictly prohibited by Apple, and the firm immediately decided to remove the Fortnite app from its store in response. Already, things are taking an unexpected turn, but it didn’t stop there.

Who will emerge victorious from this Battle Royale IRL?
Who will emerge victorious from this Battle Royale IRL? – Credit (s): Epic Games

Epic Games had obviously planned its coup, since the company immediately announced to file a complaint against Apple in order to put an end to its “anti-competitive” practices.. A document that was ready well in advance, and which implies that Epic Games had everything planned. The other element indicating the premeditation of the American firm is a clearly satirical video montage taking up the concept of the 1984 Apple ad, released at the time of the Macintosh. This is also not the first time that Apple has been targeted by an anti-competitive charge. But what is even more amazing is that Google followed Apple in its tracks, in turn removing Fortnite from the Google Play Store, for exactly the same reasons as Apple. What does all this imply in the short and long term? For the players, not much for now: the game is still available for those who have already installed it on their smartphone, as well as all the data (skins, etc.). However, the game will not be able to benefit from the next updates a priori.. For the long term, we should be witnessing a particularly trying judicial episode, which we have, at the present time, difficult to see the outcome. The real question is whether or not Apple really has the right to use its store to allow access to certain applications …

These games that ultimately few players have managed to finish

While these cult games are not considered difficult, it is quite surprising that very few players have made it to the end. But why ? Flame, weariness, lengths?

If a game is considered a classic, that doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone who got their hands on it has finished it. Sometimes, even, quite the contrary. We can talk about Sekiro, for example, which was voted game of the year 2019, but which was completed by very few players around the world. However, Sekiro is a game known for its difficulty, so this low rate is easily explained. On the other hand, the games that we will discuss here are not considered to be difficult, and yet very few players have managed to complete them. Why ? We will come back to it here.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Only around 25% of players completed it
Only around 25% of players completed it

When Red Dead Redemption 2 came out, everyone screamed at the masterpiece. And for good reason, the game offering an incredible experience to the player. But how many, among those who cried genius, really finished it? If the stats are to be believed, just under 25% of players who started Red Dead Redemption 2 have completed it. Perhaps the fault of a campaign that was too long?

Half-Life: Alyx

Only 5% of players completed Half Life Alyx
Only 5% of players completed Half Life Alyx

The latest game from Valve, which marks the return of the Half-Life license to the fore, but in VR this time around, has since been considered the best virtual reality game ever made. However, it is particularly astonishing to note that only 5% of the players who started the game reached the end of it. A very small number, which may be explained by the physically exhausting side of virtual reality …

GTA San Andreas

A finish rate of only 20%
A finish rate of only 20%

It is without a doubt one of the most famous games on the PS2, and also one of the most popular games in history. Yet, certainly because of its massive world and phenomenal content for the time, only 20% of players have come to the end of CJ history. An astonishing result for what is still today one of the most played games in the history of video games.

Final Fantasy VI

Only 10%
Only 10%

If Final Fantasy is considered one of the best games of the license, alongside VII, VIII, IX or X, it must be said that it was one of the longest games of the time. With over 35 hours of lifespan and dozens of twists and turns in the storytelling, it took a hell of a lot of investment to complete it. Maybe that’s the reason why only 10% of players have completed Final Fantasy VI.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3

Only 10% of players completed the campaign
Only 10% of players completed the campaign

While most games in the Call of Duty series have been completed by around 20/25% of players who have tried them, Call of Duty Black Ops III is falling squarely, for a reason that cannot be explained. Many claim that this campaign did not really take any risks … But how to explain that only 10% of the players finished the game?
