Batman: Why did Michael Keaton refuse to continue the adventure?

Michael Keaton, who took on the role of Batman in Batman (1989) and Batman: The Challenge (1992), had decided to stop prosecuting criminals, and we all thought that was final. In an interview with Julia Cunningham for SiriusXM, Keaton explains the reasons for this stop: “Batman was a hell of a job. And the next one was also a hell of a job that I really enjoyed. But over time, I couldn’t take it anymore. I thought, “Okay, it’s not okay. It’s not okay. I can’t do it. It’s going to fry my brain. I can’t stand myself. So I left.”

Tim Burton, who directed the two films in which Keaton participated, is known for the rather dark side of his films. Joel Schumacher, who took over, wanted to change this dark image. Val Kilmer took over the cape and mask for batman forever (1995), before handing over to George Clooney in batman and robin (1997). While superhero comics have been back in fashion for a few years, especially Marvel and DC Comics, Michael Keaton said: “I wasn’t into it at all, to be honest. At some point, you’re stupid if you don’t say to yourself, ‘Well, this is a legitimate universe. You are neither better nor worse than that.”

Michael Keaton will put on the costume of the batman again, 30 years later.

A lot has changed in 30 years. Our dark superhero has been played by so manydifferent actors the role is changed. Keaton’s curiosity was aroused when he was offered to reprise his old role : “There were rumors, and I got a call from Warner Bros. They wanted to talk to me about something, and the clues were pointing to Batman.” About reprising the role of Batman in The Flash, Keaton says: “It has to be good. There’s no reason to do it if it’s not good. It’s not going to change much. And then I went for it. You know, Andy Muschietti is a Fantastic director, very creative. I don’t know. It’s funny.” In October, Muschietti announced that Keaton “was honored to play this character again.”
